Why SilvaGrid Exists
Many plant-search tools are designed around residential gardening, commercial cultivars and local nursery availability. Those are useful priorities, but they can make it difficult to explore a wider range of plants during the early design and research stage.
When plant selection begins and ends with familiar nursery lists, designers may overlook less commonly used species that could merit further investigation.
The SilvaGrid Approach
SilvaGrid is an "upstream" discovery and brainstorming tool. It brings together WCVP taxonomy and native-range data for more than 415,000 taxa, then organises that information by macroclimate, plant type and native range.
Rather than beginning with a particular commercial cultivar, users can explore broader questions such as:
- "What arid-climate trees are native to this specific region?"
- "Which temperate climbing plants occur naturally in a particular region?"

About the Founder
Ben Dungey
Landscape Architect & Developer
Ben Dungey is a landscape architect and developer with more than two decades of experience. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Botany and Zoology and postgraduate qualifications in Landscape Architecture.
SilvaGrid grew from a desire to make a wider palette of species easier to discover and consider for horticultural and landscape applications. The platform is intended to bring less familiar species into the early research process, while leaving local suitability, availability, legal status and detailed specification to later checks.
